Detox is root-word from detoxification which means a process of neutralizing or eliminating toxins from the body. Toxins are substance that potentially can cause harm. Sources of toxins include those produce in the body during the normal function such as ammonia which is produce during the breakdown of protein, and chemicals such as pesticides, household cleaners, food additives, drugs, pollution, cigarette smoke, and heavy metals like lead that might enter the body when we ingest or inhale them. The chemicals that we ingest daily through food, water and air are deposited in the fat cells. This can lead to illness, hormonal imbalance, impaired immune function, nutritional deficiency, and in metabolism, signs  include indigestion, bad breath, fatigue, poor skins and muscles pain.There are various cleansing methods that are use nowadays ranging from physical treatments (e.g. colon cleansing), to dietary restrictions (i.e. avoiding foods) or dietary supplements. Detox diet is based on the Ancient Egyptian and Greek idea of auto-intoxication. Biology and Microbiology support the theory during the 19th century but later on mainstream medicine continues to view this as fictional and unscientific. The idea was embrace by the alternative medicine practitioners.


Detox diet also known as a cleansing diet that consist of a dietary plan that claims to have health benefits which function as a treatment for some cases of alcohol or drug dependence. It’s detoxifying effect will work if you follow a stringent plan of eating pure and natural foods. There are several types of detox diets but detox diet is usually a short-term diet that will aid the function of your lymph, kidneys and liver. there are several claims that detox diets improve energy and digestion, promote a clearer skin, regular vowel movement, and increase concentration and clarity.

Anyone who is considering detox diet should consult a qualified health professional, for some who are not qualified to pursue but still insistent must  be under a supervision of their care provider. Those people who are not allowed to try this are;  nursing or pregnant women, people with eating disorder, anemia, diabetes, thyroid diseases, autoimmune disease, cancer and terminally ill patient, genetic disease and chronic conditions. Common side effects includes headache due to withdrawal of caffeine so it is advice that you gradually decrease intake of caffeine before proceeding to detox diet, diarrhea may also occur that can lead to dehydration, constipation because of too much fiber intake and you didn’t increase your fluid intake, weight loss, irritability, tiredness, acne, and hunger. If you do it continuously there is a possibility that it may result in nutrient deficiencies particularly protein because some detox diet omit animal products. The most common foods that should be avoided when you are under a detox diet are margarine or hydrogenated fats, chlorinated water, Aspartame, table salt, Mono sodium glutamate, pesticides, food additives, alcoholic drinks, junk foods and sweeteners. Diet must consist of water, healing foods, vegetable juices.

Detoxifying diets that are popular are Raw Food Diet, which are advocating raw and unprocessed food only, Diuretic Diet using natural diuretics to alleviate fluid retention, Fruit Flush diet, Lemonade Diet or known as the and many more.
